Club meeting update - Thursday 13th February 2014

Last week was another inspiring week at Croydon Communicators. Already this year we’ve had around 20 guests and at least half a dozen of them have either become new members or given firm intention to join - that's great news!

I walk into our venue at 18:45 and I was already met by several club members as well as completely new guests. I am already looking forward to the evening because tonight’s Toastmaster of the Evening is none other than our old previous member who has recently rejoined the club – it’s KJ! I was particularly looking forward to it because I waited almost a year before I got the courage to be Toastmaster. And here we have KJ going for it, taking up the chance just a few weeks after becoming a member – top marks from me already!

Meeting Starts

OK, here we go, bell after bell, it’s 19:00, the venue is full and we are ready to start. Every time I see Paul, our Sergeant-at-Arms, up there showing us the exits, he reminds me of flying and looking for the seatbelt and life jackets!

After the three F's – Fire, Facilities and 'Fone' from Paul, he introduces our President, Cheryn, who with a little help from one of our newest members, Mary, reminds us why we are here as Toastmasters. Cheryn then introduces KJ, our Toastmaster of the Evening.

To introduce all those who will play a role tonight, KJ has asked them to answer one question – "if you had to learn a new language, what would it be?"

One of the role players of the evening who will assist KJ to run the meeting is our Timekeeper and is taken up by David.  No he’s not that David .. or that one ... oh not that one either!  For those who haven’t been here for a while, we have another David in the house, another of our newest members, and in response to our Toastmaster's question, the language he would like to learn is Spanish. You can never have enough Davids.

Next up is Paul Rhys-Taylor who is our Grammarian tonight. Knowing his love of the language and specifically its proper use, we are in the right hands. Paul would like to add Swahili to his list of languages he already speaks. He also introduces the world of the day, Differentiate, which is clearly displayed around the room.

Now it’s time to increase the temperature in the room – it’s the warm-up time. If you want to have the room buzzing and get those neurons firing vigorously during this session you only need to ask Rahmat to be the Warm Up Leader. And the warm-up task is to introduce yourself and say what animal you would be and that animal must start with the same first letter as your first name – excellent! All of a sudden we have a room with a duck, a pussy cat, a giraffe, a squirrel, a slippery snake, a shark, an anaconda, an ant and a dolphin amongst many other intriguing animals. Thinking of the many species, it reminds me that the London Zoo has recently finished their annual stock take. According to the BBC “Last year's stock take took place on New Year's Day. Then, there were 70 species of mammals, 119 types of birds, 81 reptiles and 281 different species of fish.” I would want to count the penguins.

OK, after that brief digression into the local news, we are back in the room where everyone has just stopped laughing at all those introductions, it is time for the main part of the first half of the evening – the prepared speeches, all four of them.

Prepared Speeches

Everyone is now concentratin on the Toastmaster who introduces another Paul, our first speaker, who will deliver his Ice Breaker - the first speech project of the Competent Communicator manual you receive when you join. Born at a very young age in Essex, Paul’s words not mine!, Paul went to a grammar school where he learned to speak Latin, drink beer and play rugby. He then joined the merchant navy which meant travelling the world and drinking more beer – probably many guys’ ideal combination. A fascinating journey through Paul’s speech! What is Paul’s favourite place, I hear you wonder? It is a land far, far away called England, well it was for Paul while he travelled the globe. And the language Paul would like to learn? it’s Australian! Well if you think you speak Australian then, would she be apples or you’d be mad as a cut snake if I offered you a flake with your ice cream?

The second speaker for tonight is Mary who, like Paul, is also delivering her first speech -the Ice Breaker. Mary is an accountant and an excellent one it seems from her stories of the businesses she helped turn around. You can tell she is oozing with passion for her job but you can also see how excellent she is at delivering a speech. Mary has been a Toastmaster before, and one can see she has been using the techniques we learn at Toastmasters. A professionally delivered speech – well done Mary!

Our third speaker is Dan who would like to learn Visual Basic. For those non programmers out there, Dan is hoping to learn the basics of seeing, but a computer language used behind all your favourite Excel functions. The purpose of Dan’s speech was to help us have a better night’s sleep. He explained the different uses of the bedroom, but apparently he left one out for some reason. As he explains, we can all take 3 steps to improve our sleep - right temperature, using a sleep mask and ear plugs. Who would have thought that you could use the power of three in your sleep too? A visually rich speech from Dan – well done Dan, or shall I say well Dan!

Our president has the last word or rather 7 minutes of words – she is our fourth speaker with an educational speech which is beneficial to all of us – how presidential of her! Cheryn’s speech is a detailed speech about how we can all make the most from Toastmasters. She talked about the different manuals we can follow from the start, including the advanced manuals to achieve your Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, as well as the events, contests and workshops we can take part in. We then also learned some lessons from a Mama Eagle teaching her young to fly, which I felt was the bonus part and ties in perfectly with our animal kingdom game during the warm-up session!

Speech Evaluations

The prepared speeches are over, and the evaluations are on. The first up is Sue evaluating Paul. Being a lover of foreign travels, Sue seems to be fascinated with Paul’s adventures and shares his fondness of Australia. Sue rightly commends Paul’s ability to share stories and grab the audience’s attention. Sue’s evaluation is descriptive and straight to the point, allowing and enabling Paul to apply this valuable feedback.

Evaluating Mary is Anne who would love to learn Greek because one side of her family lives in Cyprus and she often goes there to visit them. Given Mary’s performance as speaker, Anne had a list of well deserved commendations as well as a tip or two on how Mary could make an even bigger impact on her audience.

Next up is Aarthi who is evaluating Dan and his 'Sleep Well' speech. Aarthi’s evaluation was certainly not one to need yarning from as her energetic speech makes everyone pay attention to her, and rightly so. She picks up on Dan’s humour which makes a speech more pleasant and more likely to remember. In his speech Dan used a number of props including the demonstration of the sleeping mask which Aarthi commended.

Finally there goes Aleks who evaluates Cheryn. He cometh, talks about the power of three which Cheryn used numerously and very effectively, flaps his wings like Cheryn’s Mama Eagle a couple of times to commend her proper use of stage and off he goes. Oh yes, and he would learn Chinese because it is very likely to be useful in the future.

Before we break off for the first half, KJ calls David, our Timekeeper, to give a report on the times so far – everyone did well, so we deserve a break and nice cup of tea!

Table Topics

The time of the Earl Gray and café latté is over, time for Table Topics! KJ starts the second half by introducing our Table Topics Master who is none other than our honourable member for Croydon Communicators, Arcadius. The language he would choose to learn would also be Chinese because it will be handy in the future. After explaining his role, Arcadius starts picking the wary audience one by one.

First victim - no, victor, depending on how you see Table Topics, was Praveen – one of our guests - now turned member - hooray (he obviously likes Table Topics then!)! His question was, how have you prepared for Valentine’s Day? Straight away you can see that Praveen is a victor because he gets on stage, delivers a great speech and stands very confidently. And his answer seems to be very easy – he has not prepared at all. I can see your gasps, but fear not for him as his wife isn’t bothered much.

Paul Rhys-Taylor was Arcadius’ second speaker answering what stands between you and success? Paul is very articulate, but he knows the answer and goes straight to the point – it is fear, unbelief and mistrust he says. He then concludes that banishing and overcoming this trio clears your path to success.

Next Arcadius Asks “if there’s no enemy within, then the enemy without can do no harm”, what do you think Mary? Even though her accounting skills may not have been much help to answer a philosophical question, Mary was more than articulate to expand and analyse the question and finally conclude with agreeing with the statement.

You are a beautiful woman, but one morning you wake up a man, what do you do, Arcadius asks Sonya? Not to be phased by the rather unusual question, Sonya answers, I would wash the dishes and support my wife before elaborating even further.

Arcadius’ next speaker would have a super power of her choice in addition to being invisible, but she didn’t know it yet. The speaker is Gina and her power is to make people she touches happy. Then, came a voice from the back, would you rob a bank? No, I would not rob a bank, she says, because everyone would be happy and wouldn’t worry about money.

Good things come to those who wait, Rahmat, says Arcadius. Rahmat gets on stage and says that as well as wait, you pray and the good things will come.

Arcadius then continues, a winner never quits and a quitter never wins, what do you say Aleks? After the question to the audience Aleks argues that if you choose a path and later realise it was the wrong path, would you, now knowing that carrying on, you would fail, still continue because you don’t want to quit?  Or would you rather re-evaluate your options and “quit” that path and choose the right one and win?

The final Table Topics speaker was Sue with the question, where would you choose to be born if you could? Well, says Sue, I love Australia and their weather so I would choose there. But then I love the culture contrast in India so maybe I would choose to be born there. But then Kentish maid to Kentish maid, back to the Medway in Kent I’d be.

Table Topics Evaluation and meeting close

After that set of captivating selection of questions from Arcadius and open-minded answers by the enthusiastic speakers, it is the turn of Amma to evaluate all the Tabel topic speakers. She certainly has a huge task at hand, but no task is too big for Amma as she has a sandwich for each and every one of the speakers. I hope they are not full because her Commend Recommend Commend sandwiches are as rich in flavour as a Lamb Rogan Josh from the Cashmere region. She then topped it with a demo of dancing to show how some speakers could have built on their performances.

Now we are nearing the end of the meeting, so KJ invites our Grammarian, Paul, on stage to give the verdict on how we did with the word of the day (differentiate) and our use of language. In total, seven speakers had used the word of the day. Paul also gave a break down on the use of the 'um's' and 'ah's' as well as a nice, long list of interesting phrases and words he heard being used throughout the vening, like attire and luminous.

The final speaker is the General Evaluator (GE) who will evaluate everyone who hasn’t been evaluated so far, such as the five Evaluators, Timekeeper, Grammarian, President, Warm Up Leader, Sergeant at Arms, Table Topics Master, and even the venue. The GE is Stephen Edun from Greenwich Speakers. Stephen took his time to make sure everyone was thoroughly evaluated. His use of humour and storytelling was amusing. He was impressed with the number of times the speakers used the word of the day, especially since apparently he was the Grammarian in his home club last week and only two people used his word of the day – romance. Maybe romance isn’t in the air in Greenwich :-)  Overall Stephen did a splendid job and closed the evening with humour.

After a final report from our Timekeeper David, it is time for our President to get some feedback from tonight’s guests. Oh, hang on a minute I hear you say, we haven’t heard much of our Toastmaster of the Day, the mighty KJ. There are good reasons my fellow Toastmasters – a great Toastmaster works seamlessly in the background like a Swiss watch to get everyone else on and off the stage gracefully. The fact that everything went like clockwork is evidence of KJ’s fantastic job as Toastmaster. WELL DONE KJ!

Cheryn asks our guests Gina and Sonya what they thought of the evening. We had four guests tonight, but the third guest had to leave early and the fourth, well he came, he saw and he became a member there and then. So a big welcome to Praveen, our newest member!

I hope I’ve given you a taste of the evening we had on the 13th of February. If you thought it was a bit long, I have a much better solution, come to the next meeting as it is much more enjoyable if I do say so myself :-)  For those who couldn’t come, I hope I did justice and you enjoyed the read.

Club meeting update - Thursday 14th November 2013

Last Thursday 14th November was our first November meeting and there is only one more regular meeting this year before 2013 is concluded with a massive bang - that is - our Christmas end of year celebration dinner!  Have you RSVP’d yet?

There is no better contrast from the outside cold November evening of people rushing to get home from a long day's work than to walk into the warmth of the Croydon Communicators meeting buzzing with fellow Toastmasters and guests catching up or getting to know each other for the first time! You know winter is around the corner when the hospitality leader's warm hands are your first topic of conversation for the evening!

Meeting starts

At 7pm our sergeant at arms Arlene opens the meeting with a huge smile and introduces our multi-talented el Presidenté Cheryn who was also our Toastmaster of the day.

Arlene is also our Time keeper and she reminds us of the importance of keeping within our allotted time or else the notorious bell of shame will be heard!

A man of wise words who comes by the name of David Thomson is our Grammarian and provides us with ‘nostalgia’ - our word of the day.

Our Warm Up Leader, Samir, is the first to use the word of the day. He skillfully used it to craft the topic of our warm up - what was your most nostalgic birthday event? It is also a very appropriate topic for Samir because he celebrated his birthday only a few days earlier - happy birthday Samir! The room fills with nostalgia as Sue relates their traditional wake up call with a cold bucket of water at boarding school; David Thomson shares that his sister shares her birthday with the Prince of Wales and Shahid shares the good news of the birth of his second son. But as a guy who like fast objects, my favourite is Paul's. Who knew that Paul's birthday present was – although briefly - to fly a light airplane? How’s that for a memorable birthday present?!

I then hear you say "surely having a child on your birthday is so magical!?" Yes, of course it is!  But after flying that plane, Paul must have slept blissfully for nights to come, dreaming and reliving his flight.  Now compare that with Shahid's sleepless nights for months - which one would you pick? I'm only kidding of course - I would prefer to have both on the same day :-)

Prepared speeches

Once everyone shared their birthday stories, the room is now primed for our first speaker Dan with his speech entitled ‘Impact’.  In an era where we spend more money and time on our mobile phones than any other device, Dan's speech is very fitting. He also shares some techniques on choosing one mobile over another, which might prove useful to a number of the audience especially if someone is nearing the end of their current contract and is spoilt for choice!

Sue is our second speaker with her speech entitled ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. Her speech is from her advanced Storytelling manual where she reads an extract from the famous book with the same title. Sue is really showing us her amazing skill at reading a great work of literature. Now, I had never read that book before, but after hearing Sue read from it, I'm not going to cook a vegetable soup the same again :-)  That is a compliment and also a hint to you all to read this fascinating book to see what I mean.

Speech evaluations

Dan's evaluator is Paul, who is introduced by Toastmaster Cheryn (who asked meeting participants who they would spend a day in the life of if they had the chance) as a man who would like to live a day in the life of Martin Luther King and fight for the rights of black people in a peaceful manner, as opposed to Malcolm X who at the time encouraged fighting for freedom by ‘any means necessary’. Paul's delivery of his evaluation is very calm and well thought out as his evaluations always are - with easy-to-follow constructive feedback. His vocabulary complexion is as if he is hooked up to the Oxford English dictionary. I'm sure he is reading this text and marking it with a mental red marker pen :-)

Then, Dave evaluates Sue's advanced speech. Knowing Dave's fondness of engineering, it comes as no surprise that he would like to live a day in the life of Isambard Kingdom Brunel – a bridges, ships and railway legend.  Dave demonstrates his attention to detail by delivering his evaluation with reference to specific parts of the speech and highlighting the importance of the ‘power of three’ and how Sue used it effectively.

Table Topics

The 10 minute break is over and on the outside everyone is looking forward to the Table Topics session, but inside they are thinking ‘is it going to me?’  Aleks had chosen nine questions to go with the theme of the evening "A day in the life of". For one night only, everything is possible from living with the dinosaurs, to meeting your future self, to switching bodies with your pet.

The first to the stage is Samir – he is illiterate and working on a farm just to get by. No, I'm not talking about him now, this is Samir living in 15th century Tudor England!  It's amazing what 500 years can do as we saw from Samir's performance :-)

If you were given the ability to travel to anytime in the future, how far ahead would you travel?  500 years?   Maybe 1,000 years?  Yeah, I know, me too, but one of our charming guests Ram chose to travel only 5 years ahead in the future – that was enough for him. Well, while 1,000 years into the future would probably be exciting, seeing 5 years ahead might be more useful and practical given the current economic times!

Our next Table Topics speaker, Richard, a dynamic and seasoned Toastmaster visiting us from our sister club Bromley Speakers, is too humble to be either Martin Luther King or Nelson Mandela when asked who he would rather be –saying he is not even fit to walk in their shadows; but would certainly fancy being James Bond for the day!  I admire how modest he is and that having the best looking women on his arm, saving the world and winning at every casino he goes to had nothing to do with it :-)

But then who do you think met with native tribal leaders, and who killed the dinosaurs yet again and can you imagine who would learn so much from having the senses of so many animals and be able to turn a Table Topic into a discovery channel documentary full of intriguing facts?  None other than our visitor Angela and our very own Dave!  What an exciting and nostalgic Table Topics session!

Normally we have two Table Topic evaluators, but no role is too big for David T, who helps us relive the speeches from a 3rd dimension - that of a marinated evaluator, yes he has been a seasoned speaker for a long time!

Meeting concludes

A man of listening skills, David Thomson has the power to excite your neural receptors to recall specific phrases from the meeting.  In his role of Grammarian, he shares how colourful our language was – did we 'mind the gaps' or fill them?

Amma is our General Evaluator. She spent most of the meeting quietly at the back of the room, but don't let that fool you, she has advice for even the most experienced of the speakers. Amma used the Toastmasters' famous sandwich method (Commend/ Recommend/ Commend) throughout her evaluation. She used it time and again, making me feel rather hungry thinking of sandwiches!

The meeting is coming to an end and Cheryn starts by thanking our six guests and hands award ribbons to a number of members for reaching certain milestones in their Toastmasters journey.

If you haven’t already responded to Cheryn’s email invite to our Christmas celebration dinner on 12 December, then do so as soon as possible, don't miss out on what promises to be a fabulous evening!

See you all at our next meeting – Thursday, 28th November at 18:45!

Croydon Communicators blog update

There has been a whirlwind of activity at Croydon Communicators over the last couple of months but we are back with regular blog posts to let you know what’s been happening and to inform you of upcoming events.  If you haven’t been to a meeting for a while, you are missing out, so make sure you come along to our next meeting!

Croydon Communicators celebrates 8 years of success!
At the end of September, Croydon Communicators were delighted to celebrate 8 years of existence and we marked the occasion by holding a special meeting to which we invited all of our founding members and past Presidents who all helped to make Croydon Communicators the successful, thriving club that it is today.  We had a night packed to the brim with inspiring speeches by our past Presidents and founding members and a hilarious Table Topics session about Fifi, the pampered dog who was seeking a life of adventure.

Humorous Speech & Table Topics Contest Finals/ Boadicea Conference
The Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest Semi-Finals and Finals were held at the Boadicea Conference at the Crowne Plaza, Colchester over the weekend of 8 & 10 November.  A few of us from Croydon Communicators went along and were greatly inspired by all the speeches and table topics that were delivered to an extremely high standard.  We also got to attend some amazing workshops that were being held over the course of the weekend and we left with lots of useful advice and tips we can apply ourselves and share with others.  We highly recommend you try to attend the Toastmasters conferences, usually held twice each year, there is so much you can learn at these conferences and you get to meet other Toastmasters too which is fantastic.  Congratulations to the winners and well done to all who participated in the contest!

See you on the 28th November!

Thursday 8th August 2013

Yesterday was another great meeting at Croydon Communicators!

Welcome back Joe – great job at welcoming our guests and making them feel easy. Joe is off on a “Business” trip to Africa. Enjoy your trip Joe and see you soon!

Meeting starts
Congratulations to Simon for stepping up to become our Toastmaster of the day for the first time! Simon had chosen recession as the theme of the day, which can be hard to get people excited about, but his introductions gave us so much insight into what everyone was doing to help others around them.

Our very own, and always smiling el presidente, Cheryn told us all about who we are and what are we doing here as Toastmasters.

To help us reduce those unwanted gap-filler words such as "ah", "um", "like", "so" etc, we had Charles as the Ah Counter. Congratulations to Charles for his first time in this role!

Thanks to Marianne for introducing the word-of-the-day. The word of the day had so much potential to be used, but surprisingly it didn’t get mentioned as much for a while until Simon used it 3 or 4 times in one introduction – well done Simon! What was the word I hear you say, it was “potential”, and what a fitting word for our club and Toastmasters as a whole.

Ben took up the role to give the Tip of the Day for the first time (Congratulations Ben!). At Croydon Communicators we have a wide variety of tips, from how to improve out speaking skills, to improving our confidence. Ben shared with us a very effective advice to cope with recession - save before the recession. Given that recessions occur every decade or so, this is a very useful tip. Those in low income may see saving as an impossible task, but save little - save often could be an approach.

To get us warmed up and ready for the main part of the meeting, David Thomson took us all on a trip across oceans, mountains, and the heart of England to get to know who was sitting within a few yards from us.

The speeches
Our first half of the evening was slightly different to the usual structure with one prepared speech and one educational speech instead of four prepared speeches.

Delivering his Icebreaker was Daniel with “Holiday”, and what a performance that was! His role playing was brilliant with a great stage presence, vocal variety and excellent use of pauses. When he told us where he was going on holiday, I bet we were all thinking “woo, that place sounds exotic” until he told us it was good old Croydon – you had to be there!

Our educational speaker was Amma, telling us all about the club’s mentoring program. Amma was oozing with passion for a program that she really believes in. I felt that some of her passion was rubbing on current mentors and mentees, as well as encouraging others to get involved.

Speech evaluators
Evaluating Dan was an inspiring performer who analyses a speech to fine detail and always has feedback that the speaker (no matter how experienced they are) finds useful and something they can work with. Great work Sue!

Our past past president, past area governor and current division governor evaluated Amma’s educational speech. No, Amma didn’t have three evaluators, but someone who is as great an evaluator as he is a speaker and leader. He is of course Dave Longley.

To close off the first part of the meeting our VP of Education Aarthi gave us a summary of some of the events on the horizon. Aarthi also reminded the members the advantages of using the D71.org portal to plan speeches, roles, manage our progress and so much more. I strongly recommend registering, if you haven’t done so already, and start using it.

Table Topics
To fit with the theme of the evening, Paul had a series of well thought out recession related questions for the weary-yet unsuspecting audience.

The participants of the table topics session were John, Amma, Sue, Philip, David T, Tajes, Joe, Teagan, Ben, Yvonne, and Charles. Well done to everybody for tackling the “recession” with such calm, inquisition and masterfulness. In a true Croydon Communicators fashion 4 out of the Table Topics speaker were guests (Philip, Tajes, Teagan and Yvonne) , who deserve special congratulations for setting up to the challenge. As always with table topics, you never know what answers you going to hear. My pick of the evening was from Philip, describing recession to his 8 year-old daughter “if I buy you an x-box, they will take your mum away”. Needless to say she went for the x-box.

Danilen was the first to get on the stage to evaluate the odd-numbered speakers. This was Danilen’s first time as a TT evaluator, but not that anyone noticed it in his performance - congratulations Danilen!

Evaluating the even-numbered speakers was Cheryn, who has time and again been ready to take up multiple roles as a true leader would.

Marianne and Charles gave the reports on the use of the word of the day and how well we did on avoiding those gap-filler words. I’m glad to say overall everyone did very well at either making good use of pauses or flowing through their speeches.

As toastmasters, we know that whatever role we do, someone will evaluate us at every meeting. The general evaluator was Aarthi who evaluated the evaluators and other role players who didn’t get evaluated before. Well done to Aarthi for recognising everyone’s contributions and giving them ideas how to improve.

In his announcements, Aleks informed every one of the Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest which start in September. The contest is a great place to participate, support your fellow members and network with other clubs.

Dates to for your diary:

Our toastmaster Simon finally handed over the meeting to Cheryn who thanked the guests (Kimankinda, Philip, Tajes, Teagan and Yvonne) for coming and asked them if they could share some thoughts for the evening. Croydon Communicators is always delighted by the high number of guests we receive; yesterday was another great turn out from our guests. Cheryn then closed another successful meeting.

Thursday 28th February 2013

There’s never a Thursday evening at Croydon Communicators that is the same. This one was simply ‘Palatial’, Inspiring, and Educating and as always Fun.

One unique thing anyone would notice is the arm welcome members and guests new and current receive as soon as enter the venue at Mind in Croydon. And what a great venue it is!

A few minutes before time Sergeant at Arms, Anne opened the meeting clearly announcing the meeting was about to begin - WELCOME EVERYONE.

President Hanna as lively as ever opened up the session engaging the audience with a natural smile.

In his first time role (CONGRATULATIONS Oscar) as Toastmaster for the evening, Oscar described the role, with a great sense of humour engaging the audience from the start. One could see this was going to be an Oscar Winning Performance. Again, ‘Excellence Together’ at Croydon Communicators.

So to introduce the timekeeper, “If you delay, time will not delay”… so welcome Arish in his first time role (CONGRATULATIONS Arish).

More functionaries and roles to keep the meeting flowing and in comes Cheryn as the 'Ah  Counter' for the evening. Speakers, be aware because we’ll be taking note!

Still more functionaries and roles to come, and in another first time role, Grammarian for the evening, Simon (CONGRATULATIONS Simon) stepped up to the stage and presented the 'word of the day' - "Palatial" as if he knew this was going to be a Palatial evening.

We all need a 'Tip of the Day’ from time to time and where better to hear one than at Croydon Communicators on a Thursday – and last Tuesday of the month now! And this was a true demonstration of ‘Excellence Together’ where Samir stepped up to deliver an impromptu Tip of the Day at the last minute -  “Ce’st La”.

Audience it’s your turn to talk! With so much energy and grace Aarthi took centre stage. And keeping a close eye on time, Aarthi cleverly kept it short and simple but got the audiences vocal chords going.

With the audience warmed up and four speeches lined up lined up it was time to open up the stage for the main speeches.

First up on stage was Ayo, with a speech called 'On Purpose'. And it was clear that Ayo ‘was on purpose’, a speech full of great factual, meaningful and thought provoking content with so much for the audience to absorb. Did I hear 90% of me is dormant! And that the richest place is the cemetery! Ayo, definitely ‘On Purpose’ and this is; ‘the full you’. Excellent.

Second to speak was Anne with a speech called ‘Intro to Keynote Speaker / Panel of Managers’. Well if the audience weren’t mistaken, Anne could have been introducing the first Inauguration of any president. Fantastic!

So much to learn in two speeches and still two more to come!

Third to take the stage was Raquel with her speech entitled “Two Left Feet”. This was truly engaging in many ways. Who would have ever dreamt the audience would start dancing… Truly inspirational and visibly lots of “Two left Feet”!

Last but certainly not least, it was club President Hanna who took the stage and presented, her speech called ‘Don’t be desperate, Be determined’. This presented some very true to life experiences and a message to take note off, simply; ‘don’t be desperate, just be determined’!

With that message all four speeches were completed and clearly ‘EXCELLENCE TOGETHER’ shining through.

Evaluators step up, and first to evaluate was Amma, evaluating Ayo’s  speech 'On Purpose' with pure purpose, cause and diligence.

Second in line to evaluation process was Paul R-T, evaluating Anne’s speech Intro to Keynote Speaker / Panel of Managers '. One could not have guessed that this was Pauls R-T’s first evaluation (CONGRATUALTIONS Paul R-T). This just proves what can be achieved at Croydon Communicators.

Mohan took centre stage to evaluate Raquel’s ‘Two Left Feet’, illustrating the uniqueness and engaging way in getting the audience to their feet.

To end the evaluations Area 35 Governor took centre stage evaluating club President Hanna’s speech called “Don’t be desperate. Now there’s a lesson for all!

A short break followed and the audience digested the first half of the meeting.

Time for the fun… and Table Topics was led by another first time role by Raj (CONGRATUALTIONS Raj). With an array of interesting questions the audience were at time in fits of laughter as the unsuspected topics contenders tested their impromptu speaking skills.

Topics evaluators, Mathew Shawn & Issac then stepped up to provide an evaluation account of their nominated topics speakers.

So how about those erm’s & arr’s, Cheryn as diligent as ever delivered some purposeful feedback and provided an account of who needs to watch out for those ‘gap fillers’.

With time pressing Arish presented the timings for each of the candidates in this evening’s event.
So far so good and we’re nearing the end of another successful evening at Croydon Communicators where we continue to educate, inspire, motivate and build confidence.

Grammarian, Simon demonstrated the art of good listening and good use of a well chose ‘Word of the Day’ in “Palatial”.

So time to recap and General Evaluator Joe summarized a very Palatial event full of fun, learning, , impact, energy greeted by a warm reception at the start. Job done! And once again ‘EXCELLENCE TOGETHER’ at Croydon Communicators.

A final word from President Hanna gave the opportunity for all new and returning guests to have their say... and WELCOME, come again! The door’s always open.

Thursday 14th February 2013

We're back again for another evening of Inspiration, Learning and Laughter - WELCOME TO YOU ALL - on Thursday 14th February... YES - 'Valentines Day', where? Only at Croydon Communicators!

How nice is it to be greeted by not only one but two friendly meeter’s & greeters, Shawn & Elizabeth at the door to make everyone feel welcome.

Sergeant at Arms, Anne opened the meeting with BANG which got our attention! WELCOME.

The evening definitely had a Valentine feeling in the air and with our stand in President Cheryn eloquently addressing the audience in beautiful pink, this added more essence to the event. What a great place to be on a Valentines day evening being inspired, educated and building Leadership and Public Speaking skills.

Leadership skills are what we're about at Croydon Communicators and to prove this, stand in president, Cheryn doubled up as Toastmaster for the evening and kept the flow of the evening moving.

There's no time to waste; Mathew in his first time role (CONGRATULATIONS Mathew) as timekeeper took centre stage and described the role. Speakers, be sure to be on time because "that bell will ring!'.

A new role has come about and who better than Amma (CONGRATULATIONS Amma) to come and explain and take up the role of 'Ah  Counter'. We'll be listening out for them!

It's the way you say it that counts, so how about someone to listen to our grammar? Welcome Paul in his first time role as the Grammarian (CONGRATULATIONS Paul).  He presented the 'word of the day' - "Embrace" - how appropriate to ‘embrace’ on this Valentines day meeting.

How about a 'Tip of the Day'? Being Valentines day and eight years in the business of Toastmasters the experienced and delightful Sneha was simply brilliant in giving a 'Top Tip' - "Have a date with your Mentor". Again, how appropriate in context and delivery.

Time to get busy and warm up the Audience; warm up leader Raj - another first time role (CONGRATULATIONS Raj) set the question; "Tell us your favourite love film?" The audience certainly knew a thing or two about love films; 'Pride & Prejudice',
'Sliding Doors', 'Titanic', 'Always - by Steven Spielberg', 'Two Can Play That Game',  and many many more not to mention 'Top Gun'?!!

With the audience warmed up and speakers eager to go there were four speeches lined up.

First was an ICEBREAKER speech by Arish - 'Life and Transitions' - (CONGRATULATIONS ARISH). What a way to start life in the Toastmaster arena with a compelling speech about life's progression. Fantastic!

The second speech had everyone in the audience raising their hands which the question and title of the speech 'Who Wants to be a Millionaire?' - I wonder why? With a few technicalities with the projector not firing up immediately Donna was quick to brush over it and said "If I was a Millionaire I'd buy a new projector". Now there was a lesson in improvisation technique and not to get flustered when delivered a speech when circumstances beyond your control can throw a hic-up. The speech took the audience to another level with great interaction, thought provoking financial tips and anecdotes including ‘Millionaire late Syndrome'. Donna, are you sure you are not hiding your millionaire? Was that only your second speech? Just Brilliant.

Two more speeches lined up and third to take the stage was Simon with his speech titled, 'A moment in Time'. What a powerful and engaging speech! One could have sworn that the audience was being hypnotised! Fourty years in the business as a hypnotherapist and a wealth of knowledge came across. The Power of Now! Truly inspiring.

Last but certainly not least, Mohan took centre stage and presented 'Am I an Efficient Manager'. Well we can all say Mohan, your on top of your game and presenting to 200 people at a conference surely puts you on that platform of 'Efficient Managers. Very well done.

With all four speeches completed the standard was surely showing - EXCELLENCE TOGETHER.

Stand in President and Toastmaster Cheryn introduced the evaluators Joe, Raquel, Anne & Aarthi for some encouraging comments, commendations and recommendations on the four speeches.

First to evaluate was Joe evaluating Arish's ICEBREAKER speech 'Life and Transitions'. Joe pointed out the confidence, stage presence and great delivery for an ICEBREAKER, and then welcomed Arish to the Toastmaster journey.

Second up in the evaluation process was Raquel, evaluating Raj's speech 'The Unforgettable Days'. Raquel's evaluation clearly following the Commend, Commend, Recommend, Recommend, Commend technique with a great summary and "thanks for the investment advise Donna".

The third speech evaluation was Aarthi evaluating Simon's speech 'A moment in Time'. Aarthi's natural stage presence and talented evaluation delivery clearly shone through outlining 'A confident Simon'.

Last up to evaluate was Anne evaluating Mohan's speech 'Am I an Efficient Manager'. Anne clearly demonstrated great observation and detail in evaluating a very engaging speech and 'it's OK to use notes'.

A call for timings so far by our Toastmaster brought to the stage Matthew who hadn't used the bell yet. Well it is Valentine's day!

After a short break the session reconvened for a very interesting Valentine's Day Table Topic's session skilfully presented by Anjali (CONGRATULATIONS) with a difference!

The topics questions evolved around what other than a pack of cards (Hearts Suite) to relate and ask the question; "Give us your meaning/interpretation of...?"

Starting with the ACE of Hearts card - Gareth, "You have a Big Heart";
2 of Hearts, the card of two Hearts - Dave L, "Two's company Three's a crowd";
3 of Hearts, the card of Happiness - Elizabeth, "Three's Happiness on Valentines day;
4 of Hearts, the card of Foundation & Stability - Samir, caught of guard but quickly got into his stride, "Foundation creates Stability";
5 of Hearts, the card of Restless Love & Passion - Sneha, "Singing song's on Love on Valentines Day".

And with time running out and not enough time to complete the full pack of 13 cards, what a beautiful way to round off the table topics with...

6 of Hearts, the card of Relationships & Friendships - Shawn, "Happy Valentines Days :-)"

To top off Topics Master Anjali closed my mentioning to her beloved husband, Kaushik "I Love You".

Valentine is definitely in the air and a call for the final timings was made and Mathew returned to the stage. Too good to be true - No Bells and all on time.

With the event coming to a swift end and a ‘valentined’ audience Paul gave us a report on the evening's grammar noticing some very good play in words; "Late Factor", "A Late Spurned is a Fortune Earned".

It's very interesting to get feedback on word fillers and Amma presented her observations on the number of Erm’s & Aar's throughout the evening’s events. Superbly delivered, purposeful feedback.  It works!

General Evaluator David T summarized the Valentine evening's proceedings. WOW, Impact! Energy, Hearts & Diamonds, warm meeters & greeters... Well Done, once again EXCELLENCE TOGETHER at Croydon Communicators.

A finally word from our stand in President & Toastmaster for the evening allowed all new and returning guests to have their  say... Here's your chance guests, say it as it is.

OBSERVATION is great but, 'PRACTICE makes PERFECT'. Take part, you can only improve!

Build your Public Speaking skills, Confidence and Leadership skills, pay us a visit and be inspired.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 14th March 18:45 prompt! Everyone is welcome.  Bring a friend!

Thursday 31st January 2013

A six pack speech bonanza, a fully packed venue, an abundance of energy and some new faces - YOU'RE ALL WELCOME at last Thursdays 31st January event, where else? Croydon Communicators!

All attendees were greeted with a warm smile at door as Rhamat welcomed everyone in.

Sergeant at Arms, Anne promptly settled an enthusiastic audience with a huge WELCOME.

Full of energy & with a warm welcoming smile President Hanna introduced the evening's event along with a brief account of the history of Toastmasters. So what will it be, Eastenders on TV at home on a Thursday night or right here at Croydon Communicators? No contest, I'd rather be right here being inspired, educated and building Leadership and Public Speaking skills.

To keep order for the evening welcome the cool, calm and collected John, holding the reigns in his first time role (CONGRATULATIONS) as Toastmaster.

Time is of essence and without a timekeeper we'd get carried away with the fun and excitement, so to keep order with time for the evening, Kaushik took centre stage and described the role. Speakers, I'm not afraid to use the 'bell of shame', but a brown envelope under the table is always welcome... Haha.

Word of the day, gap fillers, erms, arr's and good grammar; welcome grammarian Shawn who will be taking note and not 'Procrastinating' as the word of the day.

Audience, let's warm up your vocals, who better to tune the vocal chords with a question, other than Arish. And in his first time role (CONGRATULATIONS!) as Warm Up Leader; "In one word tell us what inspires you?" There was a keen sense of inspiration from the word 'Happiness' from the audience.

With six speeches lined up on the starting grid, off we go... and first off the grid was Anjali with her ICEBREAKER (CONGRATULATIONS) called 'Life is a Gift'. And what a gifted speech this was. So blessed with Life's Gift, her brother, the Chess master took away all the attention in the early days! That's life Anjali! And how nice to know you're married to the Timekeeper :-) Audience, remember that date, 8th March. Don't worry about the year! Fantastic speech and don't worry ALL the attention is on you.

Second off the grid was Raj with an ICEBREAKER (CONGRATULATIONS) called 'The Unforgettable Days'. What an inspiring speech for your Icebreaker. Defining those unforgettable days as BS & AS (Before School & After School). This world needs people like you Raj! Don't be afraid of Maths & Chemistry, you are an engineer! This is going to be an 'unforgettable' Toastmaster journey.

Moving swiftly into the third speech for the evening, and quickly off the grid was KJ with a speech titled, 'A question of Choice'. And what a powerful speech this was. For those theorists & scientists in the audience... just sit back and digest! Neurons, atoms, physical law, free will and decisions of the unconscious mind! You certainly got us thinking... unconsciously?

We've set off to a great start with the first three speeches and with three more to go we could do with some valuable feedback in the evaluations.

Toastmaster John, introduced the evaluators Neelam, Sheena and Wumi to provide some encouraging comments, commendations and recommendations on the speeches.

First to evaluate was Neelam, evaluating Anjali's speech 'Life is a Gift'; taking centre stage well, great pitch, humour and a very entertaining speech for your ICEBREAKER.

Second up in the evaluation process was Sneha, evaluating Raj's speech 'The Unforgettable Days'. And the evaluation began with a song! "Those where the days..." X-Factor here we come, never knew you could sing so well. Sneha evaluating Raj's ICEBREAKER as a rollercoaster ride in life's learning giving the audience goosebumps as they listened intensely. How about a well deserved standing ovation :-)

Before the break, the third speech evaluation by Wumi evaluating KJ's with a speech 'A question of Choice'. Wumi delivered an account in speech evaluation and listening skills, calm and collective with CCRRC evaluation technique explaining the speech as setting the audience mindset, engaging, more voice variation, good engaging questions, great speech.

A prompt call for the latest timings by Kaushik (and no brown envelopes under the table as yet), then into the pit stop for a re-fuelling break.

Sergeant at Arms Anne, reconvened the meeting and no sooner Cheryn, our fourth speaker took the stage with her speech called 'The Roman Coliseum'. So much development and this was a prime example of what can be achieved at Croydon Communicators. "Excellence Together". Did you know the Roman Coliseum could hold more people than the O2 Arena? Now you do!

At full speed now with the fifth speech of the evening and 'Here Comes the Sun', delivered by Joe. A convincing speech about the power of the sun's energy, and how we can harness it. Full of facts and figures, powering the world off the back of the sun! It's possible and its the way forward!

Now on the final straight and to complete the sixth of six speeches, Aarthi presented her speech entitled 'Giraffe'. Evolution for real, theories, facts and science says "I am tall". Well if science is anything to go by Aarthi, you are on top of this world! Another well delivered speech by Aarthi.

Evaluators... Samir, Oscar & Hanna to the stage.

First up was Samir on 'The Roman Coliseum' by Cheryn. A clever evaluation, describing the tactical use of movement on stage to focus the audiences eyes on the flip chart; like playing ping pong with the audience!

Second was Oscar, to evaluate Joe's speech 'Here Comes the Sun'. A diligently delivered evaluation describing the technicalities of a difficult subject topic, however well explained to the audience to grasp the facts. Were you a diplomat Oscar?

With passion & energy the third evaluation was presented by Hanna, evaluating Aarthi's speech - 'Giraffe'. There's so much to gain from good listening and presentation skills, and there's no better place to learn other than right here at Croydon Communicators on a Thursday evening... EXCELLENCE TOGETHER.

With the event drawing to an end - how about a report on the evening's grammar? Welcome back our Grammarian Shawn. There were definitely effective speeches, no waffle and yes, the word of the day was used effectively ELEVEN times! So there's no need for any more procrastination!

There was just enough time for Kaushik to present the latest timings. Still no under the table envelopes but there was the sound of that bell a couple of times! All in all we were well on track for good timings.

To wrap up another eventful meeting area governor and standing General Evaluator, David L summarized proceedings. To start, Croydon Communicators meet and greeter's are an asset to the beginning of any event, a well prepared stage sets the mood for the event and Oh! Point to note; remember the 'B' button on the projector between speeches. This was another great successful event overall.

To cross the finish line Hanna thanked the new and returning guests (YOU ARE ALL VERY WELCOME - FEEL FREE & COME AGAIN) and asked the guests to provide their feedback on the evening's event. Here's your chance guests, say it as it is.

Don't procrastinate! Jump in, you can only improve, build your Public Speaking, Confidence and Leadership skills, come down and get involved.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 14th February 18:45 prompt! Everyone is welcome. Bring your date!

Don't miss out, be part of it Get Involved & Get Motivated, Be Inspired, Build Confidence, Educate, Have Fun, Smile.

Thursday 10th January 2013

What a way to start the New Year 2013 last Thursday evening, with a fully packed venue, energy and so many new faces and guests - WELCOME to what is going to be another fun filled inspirational year at Croydon Communicators!

It was so nice to see a smiling warm and welcoming face in Aleks as members and guests (new and current) were warmly greeted at the door.

To settle any new comers and pending speakers on the first event of 2013 our Sergeant at Arms, Anne opened the meeting with a great smile and a huge WELCOME.

Then with a beaming smile and an abundance of energy and inspiration President Hanna doubling up as Toastmaster for the evening, and as vibrant as ever, introduced Croydon Communicators to the New Year, which promises to be another inspiring successful year ahead.

The team to help take us through the program started off with timekeeper Simon who guided us with wit & humour and principles of good timekeeping.

Sometimes events beyond our control (namely trains, traffic!) can delay members and especially role makers, but to demonstrate what Croydon Communicators is all about - and at times can be spontaneous, the brave and bold John volunteered on the spot and took control of the grammarian role. Excellence Together as always!

Tip of the day / year was masterfully delivered by Oscar... "Be like a child", if you keep pursuing, learning you will always fulfil your goals, it's like a child learning to walk who falls and gets up and eventually will walk no matter what. There's an inspirational message to kick of the year.

With the audience set, program set, intros & formalities explained, time to warm up those vocal cords. Rhamat eased everyone into 2013 by asking, "What you would you change in 2013?". Some great responses followed including; Finishing what I started; Completing my Competent Communicator Manual - 10 speeches!; For a start, getting to the venue on time!; Overcome my fear of public speaking.

With everyone warmed up and rearing to go, time for some prepared speeches, and what better than to start with the first speech of 2013's with an ICE BREAKER. So to do just that and break the ice, Kaushik gracefully delivered "It's about me". And it surely was about Kaushisk and his ability to step up on stage with confidence and present a speech about early life, culture, observations, work and a keen interest in a charity. All this and your still 18yrs old... lol!! What a great start to your Toastmaster journey.

Now for some un-imaginative, innovative, futuristic printing. Aleks, delivered "The Printing Revolution". This was Aleks's third speech, presented with conviction, knowledge and belief. Amazing to think of a house built with a printer!! Can you print a house for me please? The future of 3-D printing is right on our doorstep. Waich this space! Excellent delivery.

Last but certainly not least was Anne who's speech project was all about, "How to Say it". Anne's speech title was, "I want to speak like Obama!". Anne presented an account of her experience in developing Public Speaking skills. The audience could relate to every aspect of Anne's speech. Well presented and delivered. Anne, you’re on the up & up!

With so much to absorb, three fantastic speeches to start the year how about some valued feedback in the evaluations.

Hanna, introduced the evaluators Joe, Arcadius and Donna to provide some encouraging comments, commendations and recommendations on all the speeches.

First to evaluate was Joe, evaluating Kaushik's speech "It's all about me", a well structured speech with clear transitions between beginning, body and end. A very composed delivery, with great eye contact with the audience. Any first time nerves were translated into movement on stage which will become purposeful as practice makes perfect. An excellent ICE BREAKER, priming the way forward for his next speech… we hope soon!

Second on stage to evaluate was Arcadius, who gave a precise account of good use of hand gestures, stage movement, great content and clear voice in Alek's speech called, "The Printing Revolution".

Welcome back Donna! Donna eloquently presented evaluation techniques (CCRRC) at its best by demonstrating the finer points of Anne's speech entitled "I want to speak like Obama!". A superbly delivered evaluation. There’s so much to take out of good evaluations.

Before a quick break, how are we doing for time? Simon took centre stage once again and recalled the event timings... spot on for all except for… wait…! There’s always one!

To reconvene after the a short break it was time for some fun and games with some impromptu speaking in Table Topics.

Hanna introduced not one but two Table Topic Masters (TT) for the evening. In collaboration sticking with the theme of the recent festivities and the New Year, Dave T & Joe doubled up to elect those unsuspecting contenders.

TT questions ranged from, "A present you'd most like to give to someone?"; "The best present you'd like to receive?"; "What would you like to see and change this year 2013?"; "With all that happened last year, what do you think will be the highlight of 2013"; "Will 2013 see the end of the Euro Crisis?".

So unsuspecting TT candidates, give us your impromptu thoughts: Isaac – 'Buying a house for his mother'. How heart warming; Mathew - 'Best present would be to be able to improve his Public Speaking Skills', great present Mathew; Arish - 'Wishing peace and harmony in a conflicting world', very thoughtful; Shena - 'Euro Crisis? Never thought about it, but hoping it all comes to and end in 2013'. Don't we all?!

Mohan delivered a very brief, consise, innovative evaluation, rating the contestants 1 to 5 for various aspects of their speeches! 4.5.4, 5.4.5, 4.3.5… was this number crunching or cloud computing evaluation of some sort? The techies amongst the audience would know! Amma - evaluating the even numbered TT speakers gave a detailed and accurate account of impromptu evaluation.

Time is pressing on...How about an update... Simon presented the latest timings.

With so much to talk about, John gave a succinct report back on the word of the day 'spontaneous'.

To wrap up an eventful first meeting of the New Year, President Hanna concluded and gave the opportunity for guests both existing and new (YOU ARE ALL VERY WELCOME) to provide their feedback on the events of the evening. What a start to another year of Excellence Together at Croydon Communicators.

Take the plunge, improve your Public Speaking, Confidence and Leadership skills, come down, join in and get involved.

Croydon Communicators certainly demonstrated another evening of "EXCELLENCE TOGETHER"

Can't wait until the next meeting - Thurs 24th January 18:45 prompt! Everyone is welcome.

Be part of it. Get Involved & Get Motivated. Be Inspired. Build Confidence. Educate. Have Fun and Smile.
